About Fiona
A lifetime of caring, a calling to connect
I'm Fiona, founder of Compassionate Connections, and at 56 I bring a lifetime of experience, compassion and understanding to my role as a befriender.
My journey into this work is deeply personal. I have cared for my elderly parents for many years and am currently continuing to navigate the dementia journey with my mum. Through this experience, I have gained first-hand insight into the emotional, practical and physical challenges families face - the worry, the time pressures, the guilt, and the desire to ensure a loved one feels safe, valued, connected and well supported.
That understanding shapes everything I do. I believe that every person has their own story, personality, interests and needs, which is why my approach is always personal and tailored. I take time to get to know the people and families I support, building genuine relationships based on trust, kindness and respect.
Every person has their own story. That's why my approach is always personal and tailored.
My Background
28 years of experience, grounded in compassion and human connection, shaped into something meaningful
My professional background has shaped me as much as my personal one and has given me many valuable skills that I bring to this work. I spent 28 years in Education before moving into the NHS in a non-clinical role, where I supported staff wellbeing, delivered mental health training, and provided a calm, trusted presence and safe space for colleagues. These experiences strengthened my communication skills, patience, empathy and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
Alongside my degree-level qualifications, safeguarding training and enhanced DBS, I bring something that cannot be taught: gentleness, steadiness, genuine care, reliability and a sincere commitment to helping others feel heard, valued and supported. I understand how overwhelming it can be to balance caring responsibilities and support a loved one alongside the demands of everyday life. I also understand how transformative and reassuring it is to know that someone dependable, kind and consistent is there to step in when you cannot be. My commitment to providing thoughtful, high-quality support is reflected in my ongoing professional development, with training in areas including mental health, dementia awareness, safeguarding, wellbeing and person-centred care.
Compassionate Connections was created from that understanding. It is a service built on trust, warmth and meaningful human connection, offering bespoke companionship and support that is centred around each individual's needs. My aim is simple: to offer companionship, help people feel less alone, more socially connected, and to provide peace of mind for the families who care about them.
